1964 Ford Fairlane Sport Coupe
Mon Mar 30, 2020 10:26 pm
This afternoon, I was looking around Facebook and I saw a name I haven't seen in a long while. His name is Erik. I investigated the name and it was the friend I had lost contact with many years ago. I had bought this kit off of him years ago and he was going to build it as a 289 CI powered Sport Coupe. His plan was to paint it Wimbleton White with a red interior and I liked the plan. But, I made a few changes to that plan. Instead of steel wheels and hubcaps, I'm going with a set of Ford Styled Steel Wheels and whitewall tires. I filled the cutouts for the drag slicks on the rear fenders. I will use a dual exhaust system from the AMT '62 Thunderbird. Let's see what I can do with this kit...

Looking forward to this Mike although I'd personally do it as a drag car!!

Thanks guys! This is a nice kit and I do have this one plus another, but that one will be built with the 427/auto trans with a Modelhaas resin bench seat. I built a '64 Thunderbolt years ago as a street car with Keystone mags, teardrop hood and the dual quad 427. It's still on the shelf somewhere sitting under a ton of dust.

Love this car, Not sure If I have one in the stash but rest assured one isn't enough for this kit. I look forward to more progress on this one

Great color choice and looking forward to watching your build.

Thanks Dirk and Chris! I'm hoping for a good looking car when I'm done. I've already been called on the floor elsewhere about the fact that this is a post sedan and not a sport coupe hardtop. I really don't care! I put pictures of the two cars side by side and other than the side windows and the C pillar, they look the same!

I assembled the engine and transmission tonight. A little more fiddling and it should be ready for paint. I also need to drill the cylinder heads for plug wires.
I painted the rest of the engine parts except for the radiator hoses which may not fit.
The distributor cap has been drilled out for plug wires and will need to be painted.

I've completed the 289 CI engine.
I have painted the wheels and have assembled them with whitewall tires from the Moebius '65 Satellite.

Really nice Mike, great work.

I found an exhaust system that will fix my needs for this model. It comes from the AMT '62 Thunderbird and it was given to me last year by the late Barry Fadden.
I added the second half of the rear axle housing. The rear axle assembly is made for the 427 CI engine, but I'll use it here.
I added the wheel backings, but I noticed the different lengths of the hubs. I'll add these last to get the correct axle widths.

I've been painting some parts this morning with Tamiya X-18 Semi Gloss Black.
I thought I had lost an entire sprue with the dash board on it, but I found it off to the side of the box on the floor.
I painted the front and rear shock/coil spring assembly, but they may be replaced with some simple shocks in the rear.

Interesting to see different techniques. Do you always paint on the sprue?
Re: 1964 Ford Fairlane Sport Coupe

I usually do paint my parts still on the sprue. I can touchup the part afterwards. Sometimes, depending upon the part, I will remove it for painting especially if I can mount the part on a clip or something to hold it with.

I have painted the interior with Model Master Insignia Red with my Badger Universal 360 Airbrush. I drew the silver stripes on the seats with my Molotow Liquid Chrome 1mm pen. After looking at some pictures of a Fairlane interior, I remembered having a console from the AMT '62 Thunderbird. A little sanding and I added it to the interior.
More interior parts ready for a coating of Semi Gloss Clear. The Dash has been detailed with silver and gauge decals.
I detailed the front and rear panels and the shifter.

Thanks Al and Dirk! I sanded the inside of the console for what seemed like hours (it was actually less than that) and the fit is still not 100%, but at least I have a console.

It may not be 100% yet but I'll bet most of it will be hidden once the seats are in place

Some of the console may be hidden, but at least I know it's in there.

I have finished the front grille and rear panel of the Fairlane.
I am almost finished with the chassis.
I need to make a set of shock absorbers since the set I found are way too long.

Thanks nightflier!
The interior has been assembled.
I glued the wheels and tires on so the Fairlane wouldn't roll and I made a pair of shock absorbers for the rear suspension with some 1/8th inch tube and 1/16th inch rod and painted them gloss yellow.

Nice, how did you achieve the crinkle effect on the console?
Re: 1964 Ford Fairlane Sport Coupe
Sat Apr 11, 2020 8:31 pm
The Model Master Semi Gloss Clearcoat shrunk, thus creating the "wrinkled" effect which I wasn't expecting. It surely wasn't what I really wanted, but it happened.

Mistake or accident, it happened! :( :D
I fired up the paintbooth and primered and painted the Fairlane this afternoon. The color is Model Master Wimbeldon White.

Thanks Al! It is looking good, especially since I had to give the body a light polishing to remove some sanding marks in the plastic. Now, on to Bare Metal Foil!

I had found some sanding marks in the plastic and in the process of polishing, I had polished almost through the paint. I masked off the trunk lid and added a couple coats of Model Master Wimbeldon White.

I started foiling last night and I continued on this morning. This took me about 30 minutes total time to do.
