AMT 64 Lincoln - Wagon Version
Sun Jun 06, 2021 5:24 pm
Up next on the bench is AMT's 64 Lincoln Continental kit which I will be building as the wagon version. I never cared for the molded in front and rear suspensions on the old AMT/MPC annuals. In my junk bin of about 100 glue bombs I had two 94 mustangs and will be modifying their chassis's to fit the longer wheel base. On initial eye-ball engineering, they fit left to right well; two are needed to get the wheel base right.

A strange subject, but I like it. I would think the width of the Mustang chassis is narrower as well. Best of luck.

Work on the modified frame is progressing:
First I measured the wheel base needed to align the extended mustang parts to the lincoln. Dave you mentioned that the width may be too narrow ... my first look was how the wheels fit nicely under the body in my mock up ... however, you are correct that I will need to add some pieces to the sides to have it align with the sides of the body.
Once the mustang parts were stripped they were cut and reattached. To add strength I noticed a nice notch on the edge that fit a piece of square stock plastic nicely. I glued a piece lenth wise to keep the parts aligned and help with strength.
The gap in the center was filled with scrap plastic then a bunch of Milliput added to blend the two parts
The wagon style roof had a large glass sky window ... not to my taste
So I am filling it

Update on the roof ... added a piece to finish off the rear edge of the roof and rear window.
And the chassis .... decided to adopt the inner fender wells from the Lincoln
To the lengthened Mustang piece.
Next I had to trim the to fit the new wheel tub
After trimming the edge, I puttied the gap. Also in this shot you can see additional plastic stock added to the edge to lengthened the chassis. Also, I added some "character strips" where I mated the two chassis' together to help get rid of that puttied look.
Modifications were wrapped up with trimming the frame just behind the gas tank and replacing it with a flat sheet of plastic (to match the Lincoln's body line). I shot it with my first guide coat of silver (which shows fine detailing still needed that can be hid by flat primer). I then dropped it on the floor and have to sand out the garbage that the wet paint picked up. A little more putty work and fine sanding and it'll will be done.

Random update on sub assemblies:
First is my tire selection ...
Top are the stock Lincoln items (not used); in the middle of the pile are the Mustangs wheels and rims (a no go), at the bottom are some I had in the parts box from an unknown diecast.
For the engine, I am using a 4.6 from the 96 donor Mustang (the 94 had a 5.0). After partially disassembling the modular motor, I threw some paint on it (it should all be aluminum but wanted to add some color). Also I started on some looms for the ignition wiring.
With the stock intake missing, I decided to go with a fuel injection system. I'll be modifying the stock manifold to accept these short stacks ...

Time is always a challenge for me and I build in very small snippets. A minor update on the LIncoln:
The trunk area was cut out along the scored lines and the roof attached.
Besides some putty along the edges of the rear window, I will have to fix where it marries up against the windshield frame.
I had to modify the rear cargo area of the wagon due to the shallow mustang frame adapted to this build. The wheel tubs will also have to be widened.
The engine is completed.

Great work so far.
So what did you use for the cable seperators?
