GeeBee's Bare Metal Foil tutorial
Wed Jun 10, 2020 9:21 am
No wizardry Gaz, just logic and a lot of patience, I've been using BMF since the mid 1990's, took me a while to get the hang of it, and along the way I've come up with my own way of applying it, here's a few tips that I hope will help out other modellers
1: place 6mm Tamiya masking tape close to the piece you want to cover in BMF, leave a small gap so the scalpel blade has something to follow.
2: place the BMF over the trim piece, burnish down with a cotton bud, i also use a well worn wooden cuticle stick to make sure that the BMF is tight to the edge of the trim piece.
3: This stage is very important, use a brand new # 11 scalpel blade, and older used one will just tear the BMF and not cut it.
4: Let the weight of the knife do the work, there's no need to press down, doing so will only risk the knife not only cutting into the bodyshell, but will encourage the knife to wonder, you'll end up with BMF with wonky edges.
5: Peel off the masking tape, which will also remove the excess BMF.
6: Clean off any excess glue from the Masking tape and Bare Metal Foil, for this i use the softest pure cotton hand towel, the more expensive and softer the better.
