Williams FW14B "The Red 5"
Wed Apr 29, 2020 3:11 pm
I'm posting this here from the old site on behalf of Nipponrookie (Cole).
This will bring you up to date and then Cole will take it from there.
This machine was driven by one of my all-time favorites; Nigel Mansell. In 1992, no one could touch the Williams or Mansell. Mansell won 9 races, was runner up in another three, and DNF in another 4 races. He won the championship handily, scoring nearly double the points of the runner up; Williams teammate Riccardo Patrese.
The Williams FW14B was equipped with an active suspension and semi-automatic transmission. Renault supplied the 3.5 litre V-10 powerplant.
The parts, part one
Parts, part two
The kit decals and tobacco decals(I was fortunate to find).
And the first round of detail parts
The first assembly steps which cover the powerplant, gear box, rear suspension, and brakes.
Mock-ups for the engine and brakes
Cheers Al
The detail parts arrived today. Set 1 is for the cockpit.
Set 2 is for the active suspension on the front end.
It's a good thing I have time on my hands. This should prove quite the undertaking.
The paint scheme has been applied to the powerplant and gearbox. It calls for some machined surfaces(chrome-like) but really won't be visible after mounting all of the parts. But heck, why not. Also, applied 1:12 carbon fiber decals to the spark plug covers. I think it looks much more like the 1:1
Thanks Mike.
Lots of carbon fiber decals to place on the model. The additional Tamiya decals are conforming quite well considering I have to rough out the shape. Also, a mock-up of the engine assemblies. All that remain are the rear dampers with active suspension. Then I can connect all of the plumbing.
Time to get started on the cockpit. In this case, the aft bulkhead and floor. Not included in the photo are the fasteners and washers that will attach many of the parts to the bulkhead.
A few steps closer, but now I will have to work out the order of assembly for the tub, forward bulkhead, plumbing, and wiring, not to mention the harnesses.
I'm keeping the smallest parts(not shown)on the fret until it's time to attach them.
Although the Top Studio replaces the kit harnesses and tub, I will keep them for possible display with the finished model. All this will be set aside until the interior is complete. Then I can start planning the wiring for all the sub-assemblies.
In the meantime, I will get started on the steering wheel.
This went together without any problems. So now it's time to work on the harness.
Thsi is as far as I can proceed for now. After the body is prepped and painted, I can continue the wiring and plumbing.
The steering rod which features some very small photo etch parts
Some elective surgery for the main body.
Despite the very small parts, no problems encountered during assembly.
This will bring you up to date and then Cole will take it from there.

Al: Cheers for importing this build to your new site.
Dirk: Cheers. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the decals settled in to the harness.

Also, I have started on the front wing. Simple, with very nice details and textures, but some rather large pin marks as well. So some filling and sanding will be in order prior to paint and decals. The carbon fiber texture molded in to the wing looks great. The addition of Tamiya carbon fiber decals should make it look better still.

Great work, Cole. What is the paint or material you used on the steering wheel and seat? It really looks good.

Thanks Dave, and Al.
I tried to recreate the suede-like texture from photos of the cockpit and drivers' tub. I used Mr. Color Neutral Grey, then a matte clear finish. I held the can about 25cm from the tub when applying the clear, and used it sparingly. It seemed to give it a bit more texture after drying.
Almost ready to add the detail parts and wing to the nose. I took a bit of artistic license by adding carbon fiber to the inside of the nose. Unfortunately, the kit decals are showing their age after some 27 years. More to follow soon.

A test fit and mock-up of these detail parts has been a real test. There is very little room inside the body, so I want to make sure everything fits ahead of time. Also, I would think it impractical to secure all the parts to the tub and instrument bulkhead. I'm not sure I could pass the entire assembly up and through the back of the body. At any rate, when this is finally complete, I can breathe a sigh of relief.

Missed this, sorry Cole, absolutely stunning work. Incredibly enjoyable. The Top Studio detail sets always seem to have annoyingly vague instructions to me.

Cheers gents.
It would seem the Red 5 raced in a number of liveries; full tobacco decals, camel silhouette only, and no tobacco decals at all. I am opting for the full decals.
Also, progress on the front struts. After a bit more detail painting on the hydraulic manifolds I can permanently install them. Then, the wiring and plumbing, more than a dozen wires and a half dozen hydraulic lines.

It's looking superb Cole. Great work as usual.
Mansell's 'red five' 14b was racing at a time when tobacco advertising was in a state of flux and so at some of the races it was banned and some it was allowed. Hence the variable liveries. It was the same for most of the cars IIRC

I always enjoyed the tobacco liveries. I thought they really added to the appearance. I have never had a tobacco habit, so I fail to understand the "danger" of such advertising. Father and Grandfather were both Lucky Strike men.
