My big boys toys. Pt2
Thu Apr 23, 2020 8:03 am
I built this from a bare (unpainted) chassis and suspension arms and bare unpainted bodywork. All other parts, apart from the seats, I sourced myself either new or used.
In total it comprises of parts from nine different cars, one motorcycle, a cyclists water bottle and a vacuum cleaner.
The heart of the beast is a 2L Fiat twin cam engine and gearbox, which I took out of a 1978 132 Mirafiori. I stripped and rebuilt it myself, fitting new big end bearings, piston rings, cam bearings etc, and also honed the bores. I also fitted it with high lift cams, twin Dellorto Dcoe 152 carbs and made and fitted the four branch manifold myself. The flywheel was also lightened and balanced. I also fitted a 'Big Wing, baffled' oil sump as per Guy Crofts excellent book on tuning the Fiat 132 Engine.
On the dyno she's now putting out around 155bhp and weighs in at under 500kg, which is less than an original 1959 Mini. So the power to weight ratio works out at 321bhp/ton.
The rear axle was taken from a Sierra Cosworth and comprises LSD and driveshafts. The brakes all round are discs and calipers from a Honda Fireblade. Radiator is from an Escort Cossie.

Great looking car Al, you've done a superb job utilising an impressive assortment of 'raw' materials.

The cylinder head was off when I saw it!
It does look that good though.
That new sva test or whatever it's called is difficult, did you try again Al?
