Dirk's Revell Ford T-5 2+2 (Mustang)

You might be wondering, "What the **EXPLETIVE** is a Ford T-5?
Well, back in the 60's Ford wanted to expand the sales of their popular pony car, the Mustang to Europe, but due to a copyright issue with a German truck company they couldn't use the name "Mustang. Rather then paying the truck manufacturer for the rights, Ford opted to sell the car using the original project name for the Mustang, the T-5. Now before Ford could ship the renamed pony's they had to remove the name "Mustang" from every place on the car. The cars received modified hub caps with a plain black center; they had the word Mustang removed from the horn ring, the gas cap and a few other minor changes. The Mustang Pony Interior package included a wood steering wheel. In most cases Ford T5s with Pony Interiors received the standard steering wheel with the word Mustang deleted. Ford did design new emblems for the front fender to designate the cars as T5s. These emblems are about ¾ inches high and 4 inches long. They were also fitted with the export brace later used in the GT-350s.
This build was my fist car build when I returned to the hobby after a long hiatus due to finding out about the opposite sex. I was givin this kit as a Christmas present from my girlfriend who couldn't figure out what else to get me. She was right about getting me a Mustang though. I have had a passionate love affair with Mustangs from an early age. Of course at the time of this gift I admit I was dumbfounded. What the **EXPLETIVE** was she thinking? Little did either of us know what that pony car gift would evolve into....
When the time came to build this I didn't want to do just any old mustang. Everyone builds mustangs. One day while at my local hobby shop (May it rest in piece) I came across a set of photoetch for the which included the parking for the T-5. That was it, I was sold. My first car was going to be a T5.
The kit
The fret for the photoetch allows the builder to build either a 65 or 66 mustang/T5
I also got a wiring kit for this, I believe it was from, Parts by Parks. I don't remember
Work started by preping the body, this means not only getting rid of all the nasty seam lines, but also the side horse emblems along with the words "MUSTANG" off the front fenders. I'm not a fan of red plastic kits (The red always tends to bleed through) but in this case since I was going to paint this pony red it didn't really matter.
Thanks for taking the time to look at my project.

After a lot of sanding primer is used to locate any imperfections to the body
Photoetch is added to the side vents for greater detail.
these ejector marks have to be removed from the backside of the vents because they are visible from the inside of the car
The same for these ejector marks under the roof
That's more gooder,
The side marker and "Mustang" name plate have been completely removed and will be replaced later with photoetch

Paint going down
While the paint is drying we turned to the 289 Power plant. Just to make it stand out against other Fords of this period i chose to go with the early 65 paint scheme of Black and Gold
The red wires also help add interest to the engine compartment rather then black wires which would get lost in all the black. Plus it accents the body color.
Measuring the distance to cut and attach the plug wires
I drilled out the snorkle in the aircleaner

Seems like it but it took time. I had even put it away for a while before completing it.

Test fitting the chassis to the body, gives us an idea how things will look later on
On to the interior
The instrument cluster "in the raw."
The instrument cluster after a bit of paint and dry brushing
The interior after some paint, flocking and other detail work.
You may remember earlier in the build where i mentioned removing the ejector marks from the underside of the side vent windows.
Here is why. The photoetch sets provides pieces for the interior side of those vents.
That's it for now. Thank you for taking the time to look at my project.

I originally thought the name belonged to a Train manufacturer. Later found out it was actually a truck company. I never looked it up. i have no clue what they look like. And now we do....

Well the interior is just about completed. The headliner and the rear vents have been painted.
As you can see here the interior vents will be visible through that huge back window.
This pic also shows how the red color of the plastic bleeds through. Augh, I'm too lazy to address this. It is what it is.
The almost completed interior shot. As some might notice I haven't added any seat belts. Well for those that don't know seat belts were an option in 1965. They weren't standard in Mustangs till 1967 but could be added to your stang the following prices:
Rear Seat Belts $14.78
Front Deluxe Seat Belts w/ Retractors $7.39
Front & Rear Deluxe Seat Belts w/ Retractors $25.40
Time to add some paint to our nameless ford. To do this I broke out some Model Master acrylic Guards Red. I then masked off the interior headliner so I don't get any red on the white
After this is dried the buffing and polishing will begin

An annoying feature in this kit is that the front bumper has a mold line on each of the wings of the bumper just as it wraps around the body. This poses a problem if you don't have any chrome paint because silver just doesn't cut it in this case. Well I don't have any chrome either so we will try something else. After sanding the mold lines I used Bare Metal foil and wrapped the bumper.
Just seeing how the interior fits and looks in the body.
Engine bay walls painted
Just about done, the chassis is now fitted to the body, the engine is now detailed and the support brace used on the GT-350 Shelby's is fitted in place
To match the rest of the chrome I wrapped the lower rocker molding trim (Standard on the 2+2, optional on the coups and convertibles) with bare metal foil like I did for the front bumper
Painting the T-5 fender badges

Almost done, just some tidbits to finish things off
First i put the rocker molding in place
The side view mirror needs to be installed
The F O R D letters have been dry brushed on
the T-5 fender emblem is painted and ready to be put in place
View of the rear vents. I'm very pleased at how these turned out
Before putting the clear head light lenses in place i painted the location silver first
The rally wheels were painted and a set of Redlines from an AMT custom parts set was put in place along with the 289 engine badge
Till next time, stay safe and B - Strong
