Revell Royal Aircraft Factory SE5a in 1:72 (Rigging Added)
Tue Mar 31, 2020 4:25 pm
Two days start to finish!! Probably about eight hours work. :13:
Super little kit with no fit issues whatsoever and virtually flash free. It did however, have two annoying injection pin marks on the upper surfaces of the lower wing. Since the wings have fabric texture, I chose to just 'smooth them out' a little. That worked pretty good, as now you have to look hard to find them.
The kit comes with an alternative radiator and two and four blade props. I chose the radiator and prop, to match the more powerful 200bhp V8 Wolseley engined version.
Decals were strong and laid down well.
The colours may not be prototypically correct but they were all I had to hand and are near enough for me.
Assuming I can find something thin enough and rigid enough, I'll have a go at rigging it, when I get back from Bonneville. I did the exhaust pipes with MIG rust pigment but it didn't work too well so I'll address that at the same time too.
I had fun doing my favourite WWI plane and now want to get the 1:48 version.
Seeing Mikes wonderfull rigging on his Handley Page bomber, I decided to give the EZ line a go usng the CA kicker Mike suggested.
This thing is tiny with a wingspan of just 112mm (4.5") and it tried my patience just a tad!!! Still, although it may not be perfect, I'm happy with it as a first attempt.
No holes were drilled for the rigging, relying on CA alone.
For refference, the EZ line is 0.09mm dia or 0.0035"
Mike...... I found the best way to do it, was to dip the EZ line in CA, hold it in place for ten seconds or so, then apply the kicker.

Thanks Gary.
The rigging did try my patience some but I feel it was worth it.

Thanks Chris.
They are tiny and a challenge but also fun. You should try one sometime.

Great job Al! The rigging is the reason I avoid biplanes!
